In the course of 8-9 April 2019, the State Housing Development Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan was represented at the exhibition called “Cities Day” held in Geneva, Switzerland, in the framework of the 68th session of the UN’s Economic Commission for Europe (ECE).
Chaired by Executive Director of the Commission, deputy UN Secretary General Olga Algayerova, the event was dedicated to the topic “Smart Sustainable Cities: Locomotives of Smart Development”.
The delegation led by head of the Baku City Executive Authority Eldar Azizov participated in this exhibition with three projects, with the objective of demonstrating a few successful examples implemented in Azerbaijan, including Baku city, in the areas of economic development, social development and protection of environment – three basic elements of sustainable development. These are “White City” and “Clean City” projects and the project of the State Housing Development Agency consisting of a social element, linking ecological and economic elements.
Head of the Baku City Executive Authority Eldar Azizov, who participated in the roundtable held on the topic “Improving Peoples’ Quality of Life”, noted in his speech that the Republic of Azerbaijan has been continuing its endeavours towards successful implementation of the UN’s Sustainable Development Targets. In addition, in his speech, he informed the attendees of the event about the institution of the State Housing Development Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2016 by a relevant Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, saying that the Agency’s primary objective was to improve the housing conditions of citizens with low and middle income, and young families, providing them with proper and healthy apartments on preferential terms.
Thereafter, the attendees of the event became familiarized with stands in the exhibition arranged in the Geneva office of the UN. The State Housing Development Agency too participated in the exhibition with its own stand, demonstrating the works carried out towards providing the country citizens with affordable housing. Those viewing the stand were given comprehensive information about the economic and social significance of the projects implemented by the Agency, and the state-private sector projects implemented, as well as creation of equal conditions for persons willing to acquire apartments on favourable conditions through the "Affordable Housing" Electronic System, and simplification of the procedures for purchasing apartments and ensuring transparency and efficiency while considering the applications.
